A memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, for Franz Dieter d'Alquen, Jr., who was killed in an explosion on March 11. Franz was born May 14, 1965, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Dieter and Linda Lee (Whaley) d'Alquen. The family moved to Estes Park in 1975.
Franz graduated from Estes Park High School in 1983. He worked at the Donut Haus and the bowling alley before enlisting in the United States Navy
in 1989. He was stationed on Whidbey Island, Washington, where his love for the ocean grew strong. He married and fathered two beautiful children, Matthew Alexander d'Alquen and Lucas Cameron d'Alquen. On January 5, 1994, Franz joined the crew of the Alaska Ocean, a large trawler which fished in the waters of the Bering Strait, and continued this occupation until his death.
Franz was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father, Dieter, of Estes Park, his wife, Stephanie, of Kingman, AZ, whom he married May 22, 2013, his two sons, Matthew and Lucas, of South Jordan, UT, and stepsons, Wm. Jacob D'Allesandro, and Tuesday and Sage Young, along with numerous relatives in Germany. He will be deeply missed by Diane, Jeff, Carrie, Tryler, Jake, Noah, Michael and Dawn.
