Joan (JJ) Garrity of Estes Park died at her home on April 18, 2014. Joan Jeanette Sanford was born December 1, 1923 in Fort Collins, CO. Her parents were Joseph and Jeanette (Riddle) Sanford.
Joan graduated from Maricopa, CA High School and studied accounting at Woodbury Business College. She worked for several firms including the United States Army Air Force at the former Gardner Field near Taft, CA. On May 20, 1947 she married William Thomas (Bill) Garrity at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taft. Joan, Bill and their six children lived in California, Montana, Wyoming and Oklahoma. After Bill's death in 1981, Joan lived in La Jolla California before making Estes Park her home in 1989. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. She had a number of hobbies, including refinishing antique furniture and she was known for her collections of bears, Christmas houses, and sweaters.
Joan is survived by her daughters Maureen Garrity and her partner Nan Ryan of Estes Park, Annette Gruber and her husband Kent of Albuquerque, NM, Theresa Garrity and her husband Eric Minde of Hesperia, MI, Karen Buntz and her husband Steve of Tucson, AZ, and Monica Garrity and her husband Mike Ennist of Huntington Beach, CA and her son Mark Garrity and his wife Jullie Gallindo of Huntington Beach, CA. She is also survived by grandchildren: Tania Garrity-McCloud, Matthew Gruber, Kyle Gruber, Jeanette Gullock-Morrison, Robert Buntz, Cody Buntz, Bruno Gallindo and Spencer Gallindo. Other survivors include 4 great grandchildren, Sister-In-Law Janet Sanford of California, Brothers-In-Law Robert (Ronnie) Garrity of Florida and Jack Garrity of New York as well as her beloved Shih Tzu, "Sue".
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her three brothers, and her long- time friend and companion Virginia (Ginny) Wood. A Rosary will be held at Allnutt Funeral Chapel on Friday May 9, at 5:30p.m . A Memorial Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on May 10 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church Burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery in Ft. Collins in her family's plot. The family invites you to share in a reception celebrating her life from 5 – 8 p.m. at Willome Lodge at the YMCA on May 10.
