Adele Kaplan Obituary
Adele Kaplan, a longtime resident of Rock Island, IL and Estes Park, CO, passed away on December 16, 2016 at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, CA, just a few days shy of her 90th birthday. She will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched over the years, all of whom know the world now shines a little less bright. Adele was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 21, 1926 to parents Anna and Leon Sukoff. Following her father's death in 1932, Adele relocated to Rock Island along with her brother, Marvin, where the two found a new home with their mother's second husband, Isadore Pesses, a founding partner of Eagle Food Centers. Adele graduated from Rock Island High School, then attended Augustana College and at eighteen married the love of her life, Morris Kaplan, who predeceased her in 1996. After college, Adele joined the newly formed Jaydon Corp., a distributing company of non-food items to the grocery store industry, as one of their first employees. Though she effectively ran the company for years, Adele was never promoted beyond secretary-bookkeeper. These experiences led Adele to form her own company—becoming, in the process, one of Duracell battery's first distributors in the Midwest. Adele's love of art extended beyond Morris's own paintings, and she and her husband were very involved in the theatre and arts community wherever they made their home. They also took great pleasure in showing their championship Kerry Blue Terriers. Adele was an avid reader and an active volunteer in the public libraries of both Rock Island and Estes Park. She moved to Napa, CA in 2013 to be near her nephew's family and her brother. Adele is survived by her brother Marvin Pesses, Napa, CA, nephews Larry (Patti Chavin) Pesses, Napa, CA, Ian (Michele Chulick) Pesses, Dallas, TX, Paul (Kim) Pesses and Michael Pesses, Cleveland, OH, great nephews, Logan Pesses and Cole (Audrey) Pesses, Denver, CO, Tod Pesses, Detroit, MI, Kip Pesses, Napa, CA, great niece, Blair Pesses, Denver, CO, and nieces by marriage Susan (Richard) Linkwald and Terry Nordin, Atlanta, GA. Contributions may be made in her name to National Public Radio or your local public television station.
