Carol Sykes Obituary
Estes Park resident Carol Sykes died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at age 92. Carol Barbara Kling was born October 15, 1924 in Oak Park, IL, to Carl and Elizabeth (Larson) Kling. Carol received her Bachelor of Arts in Art from the University of Colorado Boulder where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Upon graduation, she returned to the Chicago area and worked for magazine publisher Time Life, Inc. until her marriage to George Sykes on November 1, 1947. Carol and George started their family in Dundee, IL and moved to Estes Park in 1963. In both communities Carol was active in her children's lives, leading their Brownie and Cub Scout troops and serving as a room mother in their schools. She and George got their children involved in skiing at Hidden Valley early and enjoyed skiing there and throughout Colorado themselves. Carol continued her interest and talent in art, studying with numerous art teachers in Boulder and showing her watercolors at the Spectrum Gallery in Estes Park. She and George traveled extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand; Europe; North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. They especially enjoyed two trips to Russia. A voracious reader, Carol was Volunteer of the Year at the Estes Valley Library in 2004. Carol is survived by her sons Jeff Sykes (Robin) of Arvada, CO, Ole Sykes (Katy) of Estes Park, daughter Beth Cutter (Steve) of Colorado Springs, CO, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Charles, and her husband George. Private family services have been held. The family extends special thanks to Carol's neighbors and to caregivers from Home Instead, Home Health Care/Hospice of the Estes Valley, and Prospect Park Living Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation either directly by mail at PO Box 1470 or through Allnutt Funeral Services, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.
