Elwood B. Shirling


1914 - 2013 | Obituary
Dr. Elwood B. Shirling, retired professor of microbiology at Ohio Wesleyan University, died at the Aurora, Colorado Medical Center on Sept. 25, 2013 following a brief illness. He had recently celebrated his 99th birthday.
He was a well known researcher, a world expert on Streptomyces, author of many scientific papers, published in the Merck Manual and a member of many professional organizations. He was known as an exceptional teacher who received the Carski Distinguished Teaching Award at the 1979 meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.
He was a lover of nature and especially enjoyed his cabin in Estes Park, where he spent his summers for many years. Most importantly he was a kind and gentle man beloved by family and friends.
He survived his wife Garnet by many years, and is survived by his sister Ruth S. Martin,by two daughters Carolyn Venezia and Janet Robinson, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Contributions in his name may be given to the Estes Valley Fire Protection District or to Ohio Wesleyan University and
directed for the Burns-Shirling Award.
