James Shaner Obituary
James Heeter Shaner died on October 9, 2016 at the age of 92. He was born on June 12, 1924 in Denver, Colorado where he grew up and attended North High School. In September 1942, he attended the University of Colorado and majored in chemical engineering. In July 1943, he was accepted into the Navy V-12 program at CU and received a commission as Ensign USNR. He was sent to the Naval Communications School at Harvard University to learn the skill of coding. He later served in the Pacific as an LCI in training for the invasion of Japan. After the end of WWII, he returned to CU and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. He was inducted into the honorary mathematics society, Pi Mu Epsilon and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating he was employed by the Johns-Manville Corporation in Denver. He married Teresa Ruth Schwilke of Estes Park in 1949. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Boise, Idaho. Their two children were born there, Diane Carol and James Albert. The family returned to Colorado in 1956. In 1968, Jim started a manufacturer's representative business and worked at that until his retirement in 1994. Jim was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Denver Botanic Gardens and Chatfield Arboretum. His interests included history and the study of several foreign languages including Spanish, French, German, Russian, and Arabic. He spent his leisure time enjoying skiing, golf, hiking in the mountains and traveling. Summers were spent in Estes Park with his family. He loved the outdoors and the mountains of Colorado. He supported many environmental and animal organizations. He was a devoted father and husband-a kind and generous man. He never tired of being with his family. His wife predeceased him on March 7, 2016. He is survived by his daughter Diane Shaner Bassett, his son James Albert Shaner, two grandchildren; Veronica Shaner and Daniel Bassett, and two great-grandchildren; Everett and Mara Bassett.
