Martha Graves Obituary
Martha "Marty" Graves died unexpectedly June 12 in Los Altos, California. She was born Dec. 6, 1929 in Columbia, Missouri. She received her undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Missouri and her masters from the University of Cincinnati. She is survived by her sister, Susan Smith of Los Altos Hills, CA, brother-in-law Ry Smith and nephew Kobert Smith. Her husband, Martin Graves, died in 2005. Longtime residents of Cincinnati, Ohio, Marty and Martin spent 8 summers in Estes Park before becoming permanent residents in 1993. Marty was an avid gardener. Wherever she lived, flowers bloomed. It was not unusual to see her confronting an elk threatening to eat her garden. She brought this joy in all things planted to Park Headquarters where she and her husband Martin provided the sprinkler system to revive a dying landscape. They nurtured dozens of natural seedlings and soon Park Headquarters welcomed visitors with a landscape of plants they might encounter in the park. Later Marty and Martin played a major role in obtaining the greenhouse that now serves the park. Marty was also a board member of the Library Foundation and a director of the Medical center Foundation. When not in her garden, Marty skied, sailed, played tennis, read and sometimes hiked. She designed and sewed the quilts that hung on her walls. A lover of the arts, she participated in all the culture Cincinnati had to offer, serving on many boards. To her friends she was that go- to person for lively conversation, shared laughter, wise thoughts and a little help if help was needed. Private family services are pending. Contributions to Marty's memory may be made to The , www.alz.org or by mail P.O. Box 96011 Washington D.C. or any .
