Roy Timothy Jones Obituary
Long time Estes Park resident Roy Timothy Jones passed away at his Estes home on June 12, 2014. He was 91 years old. Roy was born August 4, 1922 in Pueblo, CO. His parents were Timothy & Edna (Carver) Jones. Roy graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Pueblo, and dreamed of becoming an Air Force pilot and general officer. He entered officers' training school with this in mind, but tragically, family obligations interfered and Roy returned home to care for his sister and mother after his father suddenly passed away. Much later in life, Roy was honored by a 3 star Air Force General, and was his guest at Edwards Air Force Base in California where he toured the base and examined various advanced fighter and bomber aircraft.
On August 30, 1952 Roy married the love of his life, Verna Lou Fluke in Pueblo.  The couple had two children and Roy took a job at the Department of Defense's Pueblo Army Depot, managing surplus and general supplies. He took a second job selling life insurance to provide for his family. Roy and Verna were lovers of the Rocky Mountains, and purchased a cabin and later some property in the mountains west of Pueblo, where they enjoyed spending time with their children and Roy's sister Shirley and her family. Roy was promoted to Director of Services for the Defense Logistics Agency, a career move that meant a transfer to Battle Creek, Michigan. Here Roy assured that DoD and the armed services received all manner of necessary materials and supplies. He functioned at the highest ranking level afforded to a civilian.
The family attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Battle Creek, and later Roy and Verna were parishioners at Our Lady of the Mountains in Estes Park. Continuing their longstanding love of the mountains, in 1983 the couple fulfilled a dream and retired to Estes Park, CO where they enjoyed hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, reading books (Roy especially enjoyed reading technical magazines and journals, always looking to challenge his mind), improving their newly purchased home and simply savoring retirement in the Rocky Mountains.
Roy and Verna visited their daughter and son-in-law frequently in California, and they were instrumental in raising their granddaughter Lindsey in Colorado. Roy and Verna celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2013. Roy is survived by daughter Sandra Burns of Estes Park, son Vincent of Thornton, CO, and sister Shirley Cline of Pueblo. He will be forever remembered and honored as an independent, highly intelligent and motivated man, a successful provider for his family, a wonderful father who set many fine examples of strength and determination for his children, and a totally dedicated husband who cared for his wife during her years of disability and illness. He was preceded in death by his life partner and wife Verna L. Jones, who passed away in March of this year, and his parents.
