Samuel Houston Obituary
A former resident of Estes Park passes away. Samuel "Sam" Robert "Bob" Houston, 80, of Greeley, passed away on April 7, 2016, at Hospice of Northern Colorado. He was born May 20, 1935, in Los Angeles, California to Samuel James and Myrtle Lenore (Baker) Houston and was raised in southern California, attending Catholic schools. Yes, he was known both as Sam or Bob. After high school, Sam attended the Seminary for one year in New York.He received his undergraduate degree from UCLA and began teaching junior high in Los Angeles. While teaching junior high in LA, he continued working on a Masters in Educational Administration at Cal State LA. He met and married Judy Jackson in South Pasadena, CA. He furthered his education by obtaining a Masters in Mathematics at the University of Oregon. In 1964, with the birth of their first child, Sam moved the family to Colorado to pursue a PhD in Research Methodology/Statistics at Colorado State College (UNC). Upon completion of the PhD he joined Kettering Foundation for Education, working in Denver, CO. After the birth of their second child, the family moved to Kettering, OH, only to be moved to Los Angeles where he continued to work for Kettering Foundation at UCLA. In 1968, Sam took a position at UNC as a professor of applied statistics and research. During his time at UNC, he took a sabbatical to pursue his post-doctoral studies at Yale University in Connecticut in bio-statistics, during which, the family was blessed with their third child. Returning to Greeley, CO, Sam became department chair of Mathematics and Statistics. Taking another sabbatical to complete his research for a text book, he was a guest lecturer at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. Finally retiring in 1992, having completed over 200 adjudicated published research articles and 2 text books, he was made Chair Emeritus. Sam moved to California to once again teach mathematics at Bell High School. Retiring for the second time in 2000, Sam and Judy moved to Milwaukee, WI, where Sam taught at an all-girls school. He then fully retired at the age of 73 after having completed 50 year of teaching. In 2012, Sam and Judy moved to Estes Park, CO for approximately 3 years. As his health declined Sam and Judy moved back to Greeley in 2015. Sam was also an ordained Western Orthodox priest. He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Cathie (Matt) Mueller and Karen (Jeff) Smith; grandchildren, Jon (Amanda) Mueller, Megan Mueller, Andrew, Ben, Marquette and Gavin Smith; twin brother, Jim and siblings, Tom, Mary Lou Britton, Mary Ann Beechey, Tim, Greg, Pat, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael,brothers, Bill and Dan, and his parents. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 21, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1112 9th Ave., Greeley, Co. The service will be performed by Father McCready of Estes Park.
