Selina Foster

Obituary Condolences

Selina was a vibrant spirit who lived with courage, compassion, and integrity to her last days. An outdoor enthusiast, brilliant writer, mathematician, and dedicated leader, she graduated magna cum laude from Westminster College with a distinction in mathematics and was accepted into multiple PhD programs to continue her studies. Her published poetry has inspired many and won national awards. She has presented her mathematical topology research at the international level. She passionately shared her academic talents with others through a commitment to service at the Westminster writing and tutoring center. Selina was also a leader in the Westminster Outdoor Program, sharing her expertise by leading students on skiing, backcountry touring, and backpacking trips. Selina was diagnosed with PTSD in 2011 and it was recently discovered that she was raped and abused as a 4-year-old. Over 18 of her 22 years, Selina battled the grief, despair, and falsely negative self-image that these atrocious events engendered. To save them from the torment, she concealed her pain from family and friends; this she took upon herself to bear alone. Over time her condition intensified. Despite efforts to heal during 9 months of residential treatment, Selina was finally taken by the incomprehensible pain that plagued her-effectively murdered by the man who raped her. Everyone who had the privilege to know Selina loved and admired her. She was passionate about the people, places, and things she loved, which included dogs, topology, literature, skiing, hiking, film, mountains, musical theater, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Disney, and plaid, to name a few. She did nothing halfway and always made herself available to help others. Selina was happiest and most at peace in the mountains, preferably with her beloved English Setter, Rhia, by her side. She will live forever in her published works, in the mountain air she called home, and above all in the many lives of those she touched. We love you Selina. Thank you for everything you gave to us and to this world. Selina is survived by her parents Kathryn Randolph Foster and Howard Foster; her sisters Lauren and Carolyn Foster; her grandmothers Carol Foster and Gaye Randolph; her aunt and uncle Leslie Randolph and Brann Johnson; her aunt and uncle Lila Randolph-Poore and Rigger Poore and their daughters Tiffany, Addie, and Riki Poore; her step uncle and aunt Philip and Diana Houha and their children Laura Houha and Jennifer Casaubon; and many adoring second cousins, cousins once removed, step cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, please donate to efforts that prevent sex crimes against children.
