Teresa Ruth Shaner Obituary
Teresa Ruth Schwilke Shaner died on March 7, 2016 at the age of 89. She was born in Longmont in 1926 to Albert and Florence Schwilke of Estes Park, Colorado. Teresa Ruth came from a pioneer Colorado family dating back to 1860 and was one of six siblings. She spent her growing years attending Estes Park schools. She attended the University of Colorado for four years and majored in geology and journalism. She met her husband, James, while in college. They were married in 1949. Teresa studied dance since the age of six, beginning with tap and moving into ballet and modern dance. At CU, she was inducted into Orchesis, an honorary dance group that performed around the state. She worked for a well-known photographer, F.P. Clatworthy, as an assistant and model, during her college years. Many photos of her still can be seen on various tourist postcards and calendars that highlight the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. Her vocations included working for GMAC as a credit investigator and as a library assistant in Jefferson County Schools. She was a volunteer at the Denver Botanic Gardens for over 20 years and was a nature guide at Chatfield Arboretum. She and her family were avid hikers and hiked most of the trails of RMNP. They also enjoyed skiing and traveling. Teresa loved the mountains and nature. She gardened, painted, and wrote about her natural world. She spent most of her summers with her family in Estes Park. She is survived by her husband, James, two children, Diane Bassett and James A. Shaner, two grandchildren, Daniel Bassett and Veronica Shaner, and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, at 20th and Simmsin Lakewood, CO at 1pm on March 31.
