William Houston Barclay, Jr.


1925 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Born March 28, 1925 in Wichita, Kansas to William Houston Barclay and Pattie Hyde Barclay and died on February 24, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. He was the grandson of A.A. Hyde, philanthropist and founder of the Mentholatum Company. He spent his youth in Wichita, and summers in the Colorado Rockies. He had a lifelong love for Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the YMCA. Estes Park was his primary vacation destination. He passed that love for the area on to his children and grandchildren.

He served in the Army 96th Infantry Division during World War II in the Philippine and Okinawa campaigns and was awarded two bronze stars. After the war he earned his private pilot's license and served in the Air Force. He attended college at Wichita University and the University of Denver, receiving his degree in Airline and Airport Management. He moved his family to Seattle where he worked for the Boeing Aircraft Company as a production engineer. He loved dogs, airplanes and log cabins.

He is survived by Ruth Slentz Barclay, his wife of 63 years, and children Mary O'Farrell, Virginia (Dan) Colby, Houston (Teri) Barclay, and Bill (Petra) Barclay, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother David Barclay. He was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Barclay Howarth and Jane Barclay Taylor Daniels.

A Memorial Service will be held in Seattle.
