John "Big Bad John" Gordon passed away July 5, 2013. He was in a single vehicle motorcycle accident in Fort Collins. He was born Oct. 16, 1931 to D.G. Gordon and May (McGraw) Gordon of Denver.
He graduated from Lackland Air Force Academy San Antonio, Texas as an air sea pararescue trooper in 1951. He continued to skydive recreationally well into his 70s, clocking over 10,000 jumps in his lifetime. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and an honorary member of the 10th Mountain Division.
As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting with his grandchildren, camping, professional bull riding in his youth, skydiving and skiing. He taught ski school as was director of the ski patrol at Hidden Valley Ski Area in Estes Park and then Ski Cooper in Leadville, Colo. He taught until the class of the 2012-2013 ski season. Also, a traveling man, he traveled the world extensively.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James P. Gordon. He is survived by his sister Gloria (Gordon) Getty of California; his children, Jen Juneau of Estes Park, John Reid "Jr" Gordon of Lyons; his grandchildren Brandi, Michaela, J'Lyn and Dylan, and his great-grandson Sawyer, all of Estes Park.
A celebration of life barbecue will be held at his residence (1217 N. St. Vrain Drive in Lyons, on Saturday, July 13 beginning at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend and share stories.
