Estes Park resident Jim Nissen, a dedicated Christian, died at Prospect Park Living Center Monday June 24, 2013. He was 82 years old. James A. Nissen was born August 30, 1930 in Des Plaines, IL. His parents were Edward and Phoebe (Winkleman) Nissen.
Jim attended Monmouth College and the University of Illinois and graduated from Northwestern University. He was employed at Illinois Bell Telephone Company and Ameritech for 32 years in accounting and retired in 1986 as Director of Accounting. That same year he moved to Estes Park where he was involved in the Koral Heights Property Owners Association as their secretary. Jim loved Rocky Mountain National Park and was a board member of Rocky Mountain Nature Association for 20 years and their President for 10 years. He was also involved in the Estes Park Genealogy Club, a volunteer Ambassador at the Estes Park Visitors Center and Secretary of the Optimist Club and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. Jim travelled extensively in Europe and the United States. He loved children and was involved in many of their educational activities. For a year, he housed and mentored a German exchange student, who, last year returned for a visit. Jim was an excellent swimmer, skier and camera enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Edward and Robert and two nieces, Kim Todd and Susan Person. He is survived by his nephews Scott and David Nissen, niece Melinda Barnhart and cousins Bonnie, Janet and Mike Barkell and his beloved dog Ruby.
A memorial service will celebrate Jim's life in the near future.
