Joseph LaPlaca Obituary

Joseph D. LaPlaca, 87, of Girard, and formerly of Erie, died Monday, December 24, 2012 at Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Erie. He was born August 22, 1925, in Erie, a son of the late Vito and Josephine DiAngi LaPlaca. Joe was raised and educated in the "Little Italy" area of Erie, and attended the Roosevelt High School. He went to work at an early age at various manufacturing companies in Erie and finally settled at the Hammermill Paper Company, which became International Paper, where he was a Mason. Joe retired from there in 1985. He was inducted into the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was deployed overseas, where he served with the 407th Engineer Combat Battalion. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Erie. He enjoyed taking walks at Presque Isle and seeing friends at McDonald's in Girard and Millcreek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Trask; and two brothers, Charles and Tony LaPlaca. He is survived by his wife, Ida M. "Mickey" Poloski LaPlaca, whom he married in 1954, in Erie; also by a daughter, Janet LaPlaca of Erie; four stepsons, Robert "Bobby" Poloski and his wife Annette of St. Petersburg, Fla., George Poloski of Cleveland, Ohio, Daniel Reeves of Richfield, Ohio, and Richard Poloski of Erie; a sister, Rose Pistone of Erie; two brothers, John LaPlaca and his wife Helen and Sam LaPlaca and his wife Janice, all of Erie; two grandchildren, Shelley Weber (Jonathon) and Wendy Meyner, all of Erie; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard, and are invited to attend services there on Friday at 10 a.m., with Rev. David Frank and Mr. LaPlaca's nephew Rev. Don LaPlaca, officiating.
