Allen Thomas Bonnell, 101, of Newtown Square, Pa., died on July 20, 2013.
A lifelong academician and educator, he was the founding President of Community College of Philadelphia. He had previously been a Vice President at Drexel Institute. He was born in Colon, Panama, where his father, a native of Erie, Pa., was a heavy equipment operator working on the Panama Canal. He was reared in Erie. He earned a BA in Economics in 1933 from Oberlin College; an MS from the University of Bonn, Germany in 1935; and his doctorate in 1938 from the University of Illinois
. He was Professor of Economics at St. Louis University from 1938 until the outbreak of World War II, when he joined the U.S. Department of State as a senior economist assigned to the rebuilding of the European economies.
Dr. Bonnell was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Haworth Bonnell, an author of books for young adults; and by his son, Daniel Churchill Bonnell.
He is survived by his daughter, Annette Maiocco of Swarthmore, Pa.; his sons, Thomas Bonnell of Montvale, N.J., and David Bonnell of Flagstaff, Arizona; and their families.
