Alton Byron Hinman

Alton Byron Hinman, age 97, of North East and formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, died Wednesday April 3, 2013 at UPMC Hamot. He was born on May 19, 1915 in Corry, Pa. to the late Carl A. and Lucy Young Hinman. Al served in the United States Army during WWII in the 29th Division and participated in the Campaign Normandy on Omaha Beach where he received a bronze star and a purple heart. He was formerly employed at Loblaws, Inc. for 35 years and as a manager for 25 years until retirement in 1974. Their flower garden and backyard flourished under the care of Al and his wife, Sibyl; after retirement he also maintained neighbors' yards, mowing lawns until age 94. Gramma and Papa were devoted to each other for over 65 years, and Papa loved the special relationships he shared with his grandson and granddaughters. An avid outdoorsman, Al enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family at their cabin in West Spring Creek, Pa., harvesting his last white-tail buck at age 83. Al was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of North East. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lilah Fleury, Shirley Cracker and Mary Paulson; grandson, Matthew Cheney. Al is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sibyl Millspaw Hinman, whom he married July 11, 1947; son, Jeffrey Hinman and his wife Susan of North East; daughter, Kathe Cheney of Owings Mills, Maryland; grandchildren, Tiffany (Andrew) Emerick, Katherine (Christopher) Brown, Jennifer (Ryan) Emerson, and Allison (Ryan) Cullison; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Brynn, and Nathaniel Cullison and Henry Emerson. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 25 West Main Street, North East on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. followed by a supper at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of North East. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East.
