Annie Hanson Thornton Norton

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister & Friend Annie Hanson Thornton Norton, age 80, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 8, 2013. She was born in Vardaman, Miss. on July 18, 1932, daughter of the late Rex Thornton, Sr. and Mary Lee Thornton-Huddleston. Annie was a long-time resident of Erie and earned a technical certificate from the Occupational Industrial Center. She retired from UPMC-Hamot after 25 years of service. Her last position at UPMC-Hamot was as a cashier. She was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 50 years. Her dedicated service to the Lord was that of a faithful doorkeeper, and she believed in serving with a spirit of excellence. She served on the Senior Usher Board for 45 years and held the office of financial secretary. She was also a member of the United Church Ushers where she held the office of financial secretary for 10 years. She faithfully attended Sunday School. She enjoyed gardening and bowling. Annie loved, and was loved by, her family and friends and she will be dearly missed. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie T. Norton; a grandson, Marques Kenneth Norton; a brother-in-law, Richard Birchfield; a sister-in-law, Delores Thornton; and dear friend, Margaret Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Willie Kenneth, Kelvin and Timothy G. Norton, all of Erie; three daughters, Minister Joann Norton Cook (husband, Darrell Cook) and Vanessa Norton Booker, all of Erie and Regina Norton of Covington, Ga.; one sister Audrey Birchfield, of Erie; two brothers Rex Thornton Jr. (wife, Clementine Thornton) of Naranja, Fla. and Samuel Thornton of Houston, Miss.; special friends of the family, Dr. Julia Williams and Evangelist Denise Whitaker, both of Erie; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, February 15, 4 to 8 p.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 E. 5th St., and may attend a service at the church on Saturday, 11 a.m., with Rev. Anthony G. Harris, Pastor, officiating and Pastor Darrell K. Cook (her grandson), of Christ Community Baptist Church, eulogizing. Interment in Erie Cemetery. Funeralization by House of Law Inc., Penn Hills, Pa.
