Dorothea DeDad

Dorothea DeDad, age 96, a longtime Erie resident, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013. She was born on January 27, 1916, in Linesville, Pa., a daughter of the late Glenn and Polly (Fowler) Gillette. She was a graduate of Academy High School and of Erie Commercial School. She was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for Heyl Drug Company, until her marriage to the love of her life, Joseph L. DeDad. She and Joe shared 64 years of marriage, until his passing on January 24, 2005. Dorothea, a typical homemaker but extraordinary individual, was involved in many activities. She was a school parent volunteer for her children, was a self taught yoga enthusiast, and was a regular swimmer, after she overcame her fear of water at the age of 55. She taught pre-school swim classes and also held Hatha Yoga classes at the Glenwood YMCA. Upon hearing about Dorothea's yoga talents, the Mercy Center on Aging asked her to initiate a yoga class at their center. She accepted and led these classes until she was in her early nineties. She, along with her husband, enjoyed golfing, bowling, dancing and "wine time". She also enjoyed sewing and liked to play the piano. Dorothea is probably best known for her passion for the color purple. She surrounded herself with purple, always saying "It's a good color" and would then tell a short story to confirm her statement. She influenced many individuals, both young and old, and will always be remembered for her spirituality and her calm and positive manner. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Daryll DeDad and a brother, Alvin Gillette. Survivors include a son, Jerry DeDad and a daughter, Polly DeDad, husband Roger Snyder all of Erie; four granddaughters, Darlane Fosco, husband Joe, Michele Kowalski, husband Greg, Valerie Snyder and Carla Snyder, all of Erie; two grandsons, Michael and Joey DeDad, both of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Meyers, husband Jim, of Erie; three great-grandsons, Corey, Nicholas and Lucas; a niece, Elaine White and a great-nephew, Glenn Gillette.
