Elbert Thomas

Elbert Thomas, of Erie, passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 at Specialty Select Hospital. He was born in Newton County, Miss. on November 12, son of the late Hunter Thomas, Sr. and Lennie Howze Thomas Hawkins. He was a resident of Erie for 39 years. He relocated to Erie from Ft. Mead, Md. after his retirement from the U. S. Army, where he served for 23 years. He was a member of Barney Smith American Legion Post #700. He was baptized at an early age and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Twanta, Miss. In Erie, he was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church under the pastorship of his late brother, Rev. Hunter Thomas, Jr. Elbert loved people, loved to fellowship, loved traveling and especially loved talking about his military experience. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Besides his parents, Hunter Thomas, Sr. and Lennie Howze Thomas Hawkins, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamattae Reynolds; two brothers, Rev. Hunter Thomas, Jr. and Alfred Thomas; and four sisters, Flora Mae Moffett, Francis Evans, Eloice McCormick, and Anniell Irving. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Kattie Ramsey of Erie and Violene Haynes of Gary, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Samantha Thomas of Erie; special nieces, Mary Vactor, Belinda Allen (John), Ellener Huges (Curtis), Wylene Dixon (Chico) and Janice Snelling (Frank); special nephews, Frank Haynes, Sherman Thomas, Clinton Moffett and Chester Wheaten; special cousins, Thomas Moffett, twins Doris Blount and Deloris Elridge; special friend, Virginia Maniece; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Morning Star Baptist Church, 327 E. 23rd St. (the American Legion will hold a service at 7 p.m.) A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Amos Goodwine, Sr., Pastor Emeritus of Morning Star Baptist Church, officiating. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery. Funeralization by House of Law Inc., Penn Hills, Pa.
