Gerald C. Deimel

Gerald "Gerry" C. Deimel, 69, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 15, 2014 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Newport, R.I. on October 13, 1944, a son of the late George and Geraldine Fuller Deimel.

Gerald graduated from Strong Vincent High School. He earned a BS degree at Kent State where he was selected as a Distinguished Military Graduate in the Army ROTC. He then received his MA from the University of Oklahoma while stationed in Germany.

Gerald served in the USAFE from 1969 to 1972. He served at DaNang Air Force Base in Vietnam as a Military Intelligence Officer and then as Captain at Weisbaden Air Force Base in Germany. He received the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Duty in Vietnam.

Upon leaving the Air Force, he spent 10 years with Provident Indemnity Life Insurance Company in Norristown, Pa. as Vice President of District Agencies. He continued to work for Provident as a general agent in Erie and later opened his own business.

Gerald had a lifelong passion for sailing and served as captain of the Kent State Sailing Team. He competed twice in the Sunfish Worlds in Sardinia and Aruba. He was an avid competitive sailor on the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay.

Gerald is survived by two sons, John Deimel (Pla) of Erie and Andew Deimel (Nicole) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his daughter, Erica Deimel of Erie; his siblings, Dr. Joseph Deimel (Debbie), David Deimel, and Georgia Heynes; a dear friend, Betsy; and grandchildren, Zachary, Natalie, Sarah, Lydia, Geneva, and Dehlia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Erie Yacht Club Foundation, Reyburn Sailing School Fund, PO Box 648, Erie, PA 16512.
