Gerald E. "Jerry" Miller

Gerald E. "Jerry" Miller, 78 of Girard, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at St. Vincent Health Center. He was born January 25, 1934 in Erie, a son of the late Eugene G. and Esther Haller Miller. Jerry graduated from the Rice Avenue Union High School in Girard 1952. Following high school he enlisted in the US Air Force serving in Japan. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to the Girard area and worked at his family's business, Miller's Feed Mill. Later, he opened Miller's Farm and Garden Supply in Reese Plaza which he operated until 1972. He also co-owned Northwest Gravel Company in Girard and most recently had been self-employed in the construction business retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard; the Knights of Columbus Council 5430; the Jaycees of NWPA, where he was Past President; served on the Girard School Board for several years; a member of the Board of Directors of both the Tri-Boro Little Gridder's football and FLAG baseball leagues. Jerry enjoyed working in the yard, in his woodworking shop, and playing with all of his grandkids. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou Frey and Norma Jean Chesko. He will be greatly missed by his family which includes his wife, Barbara Peterson Miller, whom he married on May 2, 1956 in Girard, also by a daughter, Michelle E. Uhlman (Larry) of Millcreek; four sons, Mitchell E. Miller (Kristine) of Clemmons, N.C., Patrick C. Miller (Denise) of Girard, Jeffrey D. Miller (Sherri) of Girard, Charles J. Miller of Wallingford, Pa.; a brother Fr. Charles Miller O.F.M. of N.Y., N.Y.; ten grandchildren, Joshua A. (Erin), Matthew J., Zachary J., Alexandria M., Kara N., Ashley E., Lukas M., Kristen M., Brandon M., McKenzie E. Miller; one precious great-granddaughter, Noelle Miller and many nieces and nephews. Jerry will also be missed by many close friends and neighbors. Friends may call on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. A Prayer Service will be held there on Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave. Girard at 10 a.m. Rev.
