Harold C. Woodhouse

Harold C. Woodhouse, 94, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the family homestead in North East. Harold was born on September 24, 1919, in Cedar Run, Pa., a son of the late Fred and Jennie Eckstrom Johnson Woodhouse.

Harold served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in WWII, building bridges across European Rivers in advance of armed forces movements across France and Germany. He served in five major campaigns and earned the rank of Master Sergeant by the end of the war. Harold moved to North East and worked for Frye's Construction and then GE. He and his wife Mary took over her parent's fruit farm on Rte. 89 in 1952, where they grew grapes, apples, cherries, plums and pears for many years.

Harold married Mary Foye in 1945, after returning from WWII. Mary died in 1989, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. They had no children but many nieces and nephews, including his nephew Dennis Kershner and his wife Waynna, who retired and moved here in 2011, and purchased the family fruit farm from Harold in 2011. Harold lived with them until his death this past Sunday. Harold is also survived by one sister Gloria Johnson of Jersey Shore, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Mary, Harold was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Earl Woodhouse and three sisters, Edith Kershner, Gertrude Purvis and Ina Woodhouse.

Harold was loved by his family and friends and will be sorely missed by all that were blessed by his presence in their lives.

Friends will be received at the W. Tad Bowers Funeral Home, 92 S. Lake St., North East, Pa., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend funeral services there on Thursday at 10 a.m. Pastor Michael Grove will officiate. Interment will be in North East Cemetery.
