John T. Carpenter


John T. Carpenter, of Aransas Pass, Texas passed away October 5, 2013 at home, surrounded by family.

John was born June 3, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio.

He grew up in Erie, Pa. with his three sisters, Susan Dixson of Iowa, Carol Carpenter and Ann Oshlick of Erie, Pa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Virginia Sheehan Carpenter and his nephew, Frank N. Bauregger.

After graduating from Strong Vincent high school in 1966 he volunteered in the Army and was sent to Vietnam in 1967. He served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade as a LRRP (Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol) Ranger. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He enjoyed traveling, including a year he lived in Kenya with the Maasai, spoke Swahili, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and helped catch a python for the local zoo. He developed a passion for skydiving as a Ranger in the Army. John and a friend started the Erie Skydiving Club. During that time he met and married his wife of 39 years, Christine Henry Carpenter. John worked at the Corpus Christie Army Depot as a helicopter mechanic and inspector until his retirement last year. John also had a passion for bagpiping. He was asked to play for weddings, funerals and military events. John and Chris have three children, David, Megan and Colleen. He greatly enjoyed spending time with them and his six grandchildren: Caleb, Lillian, Nathaniel , Gabriel, Evelyn and Emmett.

A funeral service was held on October 8, 2013 at the Northbay Fellowship Church, 3530 Main, Ingleside, Texas. A service followed at the Coastal Bend State Veteran's Cemetery in Corpus Christie, Texas with full military honors.
