Rev. John W. Brewer

How do you write an obituary for a man who meant so much and touched so many? The man known as: Dad, Papo, Papa, Pap, Grandpa, "JW", Brother "J", Brother Brewer, Pastor Brewer, Uncle "J" and The University of Kentucky Wildcats #1 fan. He will be sadly missed. Pastor John W. Brewer passed into eternal life with Our Lord Jesus Christ on March 4th, 2013, surrounded by his family and friends in his home in North East. John was born "JW" Brewer July 30th 1931 in Jackson, Kentucky to parents Willie Brewer and Nora Hensley Brewer. He was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Nora Brewer, his loving wife of 56 years, Jean Turner Brewer, his eldest son John W. Brewer Jr., sister Myrtle Jones and brother, Cecil Brewer. As a young Kentucky coal miner he was seriously injured during a collapse in 1953. After a lengthy recovery, he and his family came to Erie to visit an ailing relative. While visiting they attended a small non-denominational Pentecostal church, "The Church of Jesus Christ in God", where he was appointed pastor in 1963, serving for nearly 50 years as spiritual leader. Pastor Brewer was a man who could be called upon at any time day or night, living a life of total servitude, to both God and his fellow man. JW also worked as a molder at Erie Bronze and as a laborer with the Laborer's International Union of North America Local 603 working on both I-79 & I-90. After retirement he continued to work as a home improvement contractor. He was the general contractor when building his current home at the age of 78. John is survived by two daughters, Linda Perry and husband Bob of North East, Kathy Huggler and husband Glenn of Erie, daughter-in-law Margaret Johnson Brewer of North East, three sons, Randy Brewer of Spartansburg, Dan Brewer and wife Liz of Erie, and Steve Brewer and wife Rhonda of North East. "Papo/Papa" will be missed by 25 grandchildren and 25½ great grandchildren, each of whom he loved, cherished and teased. JW is also survived by eight brothers: Pastor Arnold, Lawrence, Lloyd, Jerry, Hager, George, Willie Jr. and James, and five sisters: Sandra Brewer, Sue Goins, Peggy Drennen, Vera Coughlan and Mary Mullins. He loved and was loved by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Friends and family are invited to attend visitation and funeral service at The Church of Jesus Christ in God, 1706 Poplar Street, Erie, PA 16504, with visitation on Thursday, March 7th 7:00 9:00 p.m. and Friday March 8th 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service, officiated by Pastor Jody Irwin, will be Saturday, March 9th at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Erie, Pa.
