Mary Wingerter Knight-Strong


Mary Wingerter Knight-Strong, age 48, of North East, died on Friday, February 7, 2014 at UPMC Hamot after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on August 14, 1965 in Erie, Pa., to Ann Dorris Wingerter-Richardson (Wes) of Harborcreek and the late James Wingerter.

Mary graduated from Villa Maria Academy, served in the United States Marine Corp., and graduated from Mercyhurst College where she received her degree in Criminal Justice.

She was formerly employed at Edmund L. Thomas Center, Erie County Prison, drug and alcohol counselor for Erie County, and Director of Erie County Veteran Affairs.

Mary was a member of St. Gregory Church, St. Gregory Wonder Workers, North East American Legion Post 105, North East Sports Boosters, Marine Corp. League-Lake Erie Marine Detachment No. 293, and was instrumentally involved with Toys For Tots.

Mary was a kindhearted person who loved volunteering, spending time with family, and was the biggest cheerleader for her children. She will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her husband of nine years, John Strong of North East whom she married October 29, 2005; her daughter, Felicity Knight; her sons, David Knight, Zachary Knight, Maximillian Knight, Luke Knight, and Zane Knight-Strong, all of North East; a granddaughter, Emily Knight; sisters and brothers, Cathy Vogel (Bryan) of Harborcreek, Joe Wingerter (Emily) of Harborcreek, Teresa Hall (Scott) of Erie, Ben Wingerter (Miriam) of Tennessee, Susan Yurkewicz (Steve) of Erie, Paul Wingerter of Indiana, Pa., Elizabeth Brown (Noble) of Harborcreek, Peter Wingerter (Sarah) of Washington State, Bernadette Walters of Waterford, Louise Blose (Justin) of Waterford, and Stephen Wingerter (Adam Oldach) of Erie; her children's grandparents, Carol and Robert Knight; an aunt, Diane Knight; a cousin, Carol Knight; and also many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, on Monday 2-5 and 7-9, and are invited to attend a prayer service on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church. The Marine Corp. League will hold a service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Interment with full military honors will be held at St. Gregory Cemetery following the Mass.
