Nicholas J. Barbato, Sr. age 92, of Erie passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the PA Soldiers & Sailor's Home. He was born December 25, 1920 in Erie, the son of the late John and Agatha Barbato.
A lifelong resident of Erie, Nick had served as a staff sergeant with the Army Air Corp during WWII
. He had flown in over 30 combat missions over occupied Germany, bombing strategic military targets. He was honorably discharged and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Presidential Citation.
Following the war, Nick and his wife, Anne, owned and operated Barbato's Restaurant on State St. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing and spending winters in Florida with his wife, Anne. He was also a member of the Erie Wolves Club.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Manczka Barbato who died in 2003; and his two brothers, Albert and Patrick Barbato.
Nick is survived by a son, Nicholas J. Barbato, Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Erie along with a grandson, Corey Barbato and his wife, Jodi of Edinboro. He is the brother of John Barbato and his wife, Millie, and Fred Barbato, all of Erie.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Wednesday from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Thursday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul's RC Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
