Richard J. Gorny

Richard J. Gorny, age 88, of Erie, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Sunrise Assisted Living. Born in Erie on March 20, 1924, he was a son of the late Stanislaus J. and Helen Marie (Szczesny) Gorny. Richard served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a Staff Sergeant, and was an Aerial Engineer with the 437th Troop Carrier Group. Flying 60 combat hours and 11 combat missions, he received the Air Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge, and participated in the D-Day Invasion, Battle of the Bulge and Operation Garden Market, in Holland. He was the past president of the Keystone Electric Construction Company where he was an electrical contractor before his retirement. He was a member of IBEW Local #56 and also the Erie Yacht Club for 44 years. Richard enjoyed racing the "Banshee" with family and friends and was a three time winner of the Lake Erie Interclub Race. He also enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alexandra M (Pazdro) Gorny, two brothers, Donald and Norbert "Skip" Gorny, and a sister, Theresa Bradley. Richard is survived by two daughters, Susan Calvano, husband Dave, of Erie and Deborah Hails, husband Alan, of Osprey, Fla.; two sons Greg Gorny, wife M'Lynn and Peter Gorny, all of Erie; six grandchildren, Tracy Shepard, husband Steve, Ellen Kalivoda, husband Andrew, Molly Robinette, husband Curtis, Ryan Hails and Nicholas and Alexander Gorny. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Sophia Kalivoda and Remley Shepard, and two great-grandsons, Reece Kalivida and Owen Robinette; several nieces and nephews also survive. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 at the Brugger Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, and may attend a service there on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at Calvary Mausoleum.
