Robert C. "Bob" Ester

Robert C. "Bob" Ester, age 89, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at St. Mary's Home East. He was born October 24, 1924, son of the late Charles and Florence Sharrer Ester.

Bob enlisted in the Army in July 1943, and was assigned to the 75th Infantry Division in the European war zone. As a staff sergeant, he fought in several major campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. For leadership qualities displayed under enemy fire, he received a battlefield commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged from the Army in April 1946, and returned to Erie to work at General Electric. Bob was a graduate of the GE Apprentice program, and served in a management position within the Locomotive Renewal parts division. With 39 years of service, he retired on January 1, 1985. Bob was a member of GEER (GE Exempt Retirees), where he served as treasurer for the organization for 28 years. He also enjoyed uncountable hours creating wood crafts in his workshop.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a younger brother, Donald Ester, of California.

Bob is survived by his wife, Theresa Marie Jarmolowicz Ester. They were happily married for 63 years. Also surviving are two sons, James Robert and Daniel Carl; a daughter, Shirley Ann Graeca; five grandchildren, James, LeeAnn, Erin, Amy and Jeff; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Ester (Alice) of Glendale, Ariz.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a prayer service there on Thursday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
