Robert Carl Schmitty Schmitt

Robert Carl "Schmitty" Schmitt, age 65, of Erie, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Erie Veterans' Affairs Medical Center. He was born August 5, 1948, in Erie, son of the late Mary Margaret Raudman and Robert Joseph Schmitt.

Bob attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1966. He served in the US Army, where he was assigned to the 57th Transportation Company. During his time in the military, he earned the National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, and the Overseas Service Medals, with two bars, and the Sharpshooter (M-14), Marksmen (M-16) badges.

Upon his return from Vietnam, he was employed at Erie Forge and Steel for 47 years. He was an avid golfer, swimmer, bicyclist, and a member of Erie Runners Club. He also enjoyed football and baseball. As a volunteer for the Erie County Special Olympics, he acted as a golf and softball coach. He prided himself on having two hole-in-one shots in his golf career: on the 1st hole at Orchard Pond and the 7th hole at Erie Golf Course. He completed two Marine Corps Marathons, the Cleveland Marathon, numerous Erie Runners Club Marathons and St. Vincent Quad Games. He was a Lifetime Flaming Zukor, a member of the Elks Lodge #67, and VFW Post 470.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 36 1/2 years, Susan Dieteman Schmitt, son Michael Joseph and his wife Karen, daughter Emily Elizabeth Schmitt, and grandchildren Morgan Ellyn and Robert Joseph Schmitt. He is also survived by siblings Mary Ellen Walker and her husband Howard, brother Chuck and his wife Rose Ann, brother Doug and his wife Pat, Aunt Eleanor Fuhrman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was very loving, kind and always there for others. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Viewings will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street, at Greengarden Boulevard. Services will be held there on Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Peace Church at 10 o'clock.
