Joseph Lesniewski Obituary

One of Original "Band of Brothers" Joseph A. Lesniewski, age 91, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born in Erie on August 29, 1920, son of the late Joseph and Rose Ciechacki Lesniewski. Joseph attended St. Stanislaus Parochial School, where he learned to speak the Polish language fluently. After graduating from grade school, he attended Erie Technical High School, from which he graduated in 1940. Joseph spent one year in the Civilian Conservation Crops and went on to work at General Electric after completing his service in the C.C.C. He was a tool & die maker at G.E. until he volunteered for the military in 1942. His military career began with the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942. He attended school at Chanute Field, Illinois where they taught him sheet metal work for repairs on airplanes. From there he went to Detroit, Michigan to yet another school at U.S. Rubber Co. to learn the process of repairing self-sealing fuel tanks. Upon completion of this course, he was transferred to Hunter Field in Savannah, Ga. It was at this point he volunteered for the Paratroops. He received his wings after eight weeks of training and completion of his required jumps. Joseph had more training at Camp Mackall, N.C. From there he was sent to Helen's Bay, Northern Ireland, where he was interviewed by a Polish General and tested on his ability to speak Polish. Joseph was then told he was a member of the OSS. It was after this he was sent to the 101st Airborne Division; and became one of the original Band of Brothers. Joseph was invited by U.S. Senator John Kerry to accompany him at the dedication of the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was proud to be a part of the dedication as well as serving his country proudly. Upon his return to Erie he went back to work at G.E. for a few years, and then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in 1946. He retired from the Postal Service in 1983. John was a member of St. Stanislaus R.C. Church, a member of American Legion Carl Neff Post #571, and the Moniuszko Club. Joseph is survived by his wife of 38 years, Phyllis Schindley Lesniewski; four daughters, Patty Elmi of Teapack, N.J., Janet Fowler (Bill), Elaine Winslow, and Jeanne Vollentine (Ken) all of Erie; two sons, Joe Lesniewski and John Lesniewski (Melissa) all of Erie; two sisters, Phyllis Kiklinski and Florence Forish both of Erie; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Lesniewski; one sister, Sophie Wienczkowski, and a grandson, Jeremy G. Fowler. I think I may be Joe's 2d cousin. When my daughter and I watched BAND OF BROTHERS several years ago, when Joe talked, I commented that he looked so much like my mother Jane's brother, Uncle “Jake” (Edmund). When his name finally flashed on the screen way at the end, I couldn't believe it – the same as Uncle Jake's. I called my cousin in her late 80's at the time and she said “some of them went to Pennsylvania.” Then I see Joe lives in PA. My grandfather, Vincent Lesniewski, who was married to Catherine Szurgot in Poland, went to Chicago. I found my grandfather's death certificate which showed HIS father as Wawrzyniec Lesniewski; however, I could never find Joe Sr.'s death certificate under Ancestry.com to see if his father had that same first name. Or anywhere else. Attaching a picture of Jake – see the resemblance? - with his sister's 3 daughters. I'm to his right. I just want Joe's descendants to know that Jake said he was very proud if he was Joe's cousin. Jake's brother John Lesniewski received the Silver Star in 1945 in Luzon, Philippines. Jake served in England during the war. Brave fellows, all. Rest in peace, Joe. If I'm not related, I'm proud my mother was born with the name. Elinor Wencka, Tampa

Joe was obviously a member of the Band of Brothers unit, but he was also a military lightweight boxer early in WW2. He was trained by former heavyweight boxer Max Baer (think of the huge champion in the movie Cinderella Man). I met Joe at Lakeland Community College a few years ago and we had a great conversation. He showed me a signed photo of himself with Max Baer Sr. and said he had tried to contact Max Baer Jr. (yep...Jethro from the Beverly Hillbilly's TV show) just to share with him what a good man his father was. I mentioned I had law enforcement contacts in Las Vegas where Max Jr. was and I'd do my best to get him in contact with him. It took some doing, but one day Max Jr. called me and we talked for about an hour....a really great call. And then he called Joe and talked to him as well. Joe gave Max some insights into his father, and Max gave Joe some insights into his dad from the son's perspective. Thanks Joe for helping me make a connection that I would not have had but for your heroism in WW2...it was a pleasure to hook you and Max Jr. up and I'm sure he made your day as he made mine. May you rest in peace knowing that America was made greater by the men and women of your generation.

My brother invited me to the Gem City Gun Club a number of years ago to help set up his display. He teased me by telling me there will be someone there I will want to meet. I waited in line to meet Joe and I'm so glad I did. During our conversation He told me he had been a mail carrier in Erie. I told him I am currently a mail carrier in Clymer, NY. It was then we really hit it off well. I am so thankful Joe allowed me into his home to share some of his stories of the War that so vividly remained in his mind. My most meaningful visit was one of the last times I saw him. He said he wanted to show me something. He stepped away and returned with a box. He opened it and began to remove some of the items. The first thing I recognized was the clicker. I picked it up and asked if this was the clicker he carried when he jumped on D-Day. He assured me it was. I looked down again and there laid his jump wings. I reached down with my other hand and picked them up. I don't have the words to explain the feeling I felt at that moment as I held them knowing they were with Joe when he jumped on D-Day. My wish is that every man, woman and child could have a conversation with a man like Joe Lesniewski. I will be forever grateful to Joe and Phyllis for the time I spent with them. I am a far better man for having known Joe. This Country is a better place because Joe was here. And now Heaven is a better place because Joe is there. May God watch over the Lesniewski family and give them strength through this time of such a great loss.

My heart is so heavy, as the proud daughter of a WWII vet I am so saddened at the loss of yet another of the Greatest Generation. Though they would never want to be called heroes, they were and are to many. Joe, and the other WWII vets before him, have a left a remarkable imprint on the lives of every American. Please accept our sincere sympathy in your loss.
