Albert J. DeLuca, age 91, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at UPMC Hamot surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Erie on March 7, 1922, son of the late Dominik and Concetta Amendola DeLuca. Al graduated from East High School (Class of 1940). He was treasurer of his class and participated in the reunions through the years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served his country for three and a half years and was discharged as a Gunner's Mate First Class. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during WWII, receiving Atlantic and Pacific medals, the Phillipine Liberator Medal and nine Bronze Stars. He was the proprietor of the State News and Variety Store and owner of the Historic Building at 5th & State Streets since 1946. He was often called the "Mayor of East 5th Street." It is still in operation under the ownership of his son, Albert. Al joined the Boys & Girls Club at age six and was an avid supporter all his life, serving as a Board Member for over 40 years. The Boys & Girls Club honored him with awards for "Youth on a Mission" in 1994, "Man of the Year" in 1995, and he also received "Outstanding Service to the Youth of our Community" award. His passion after retiring was golf and He had a "Hole in One" and was a member of the Lawrence park Golf Club for 26 years. He was a member of St. James R.C. Church for 64 years; a lifetimemember of the Erie Maennerchor Club, East Erie Turners and also American Legion Post #771. He was married to the love of his life, Margaret (Gorski) for 69 years. They would have celebrated their 70th anniversary on December 26, 2013. They danced their way through life. His happiest achievement was being the father of three children, Bonita Faulkner (Tom), Janice DiFuccia (Paul) and Albert DeLuca (Renee') and grandfather to Sean and Aaron Faulkner (Sandy), Brook and John Kramer, and Alicia Tabbutt (Brandon)and Julia DeLuca; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Luella Faulkner. He is also survived by brothers, James (Dorothy), Richard (Sally) and Edward (Shirley); sisters, Rose Chilelli, Elizabeth Corritore, Jane Marchant, Edith Alberico (Marco) and Lena Conway; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Frank DeLuca. Al's family would like to thank the Soldiers & Sailors Home caregivers, who were very loving and kind. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and are invited to attend a Prayer Service there on Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James R.C. Church at 10 a.m. Entombment, Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.
