Betty Firch Flanagan passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Sunday, January 6, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was just four days shy of her 93rd birthday. Betty was born in Erie on January 10, 1920 and graduated from Strong Vincent High School. She worked at the Erie County Courthouse in Adoption Investigations before becoming Deputy of the Office of Register of Wills. It was there that she teamed with her sister-in-law in creating the dynamic duo of "Miss Betty" and "Mrs. Betty" Flanagan. Together, with a compassionate tone, they showed hundreds of local attorneys how things were done in the Wills office, willing to assist each and every one of them as they learned the ropes as young lawyers. Years later, many of those same attorneys still thanked her for her expertise, professionalism, and kindness. She retired in 2002 ending a brilliant 34 years of service at the Court House. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, William Michael Flanagan who passed away in 1985; her brother, Edward Flanagan, and a sister, Gertrude Fogleboch. She is survived by her son, William E. Flanagan and his wife Mary; her daughter, Maureen B. Flanagan; her grandson, William E. Flanagan, Jr. and his wife Stephanie, all of Erie and her granddaughter, Brigid Flanagan Miller and her husband Dr. Lester H. Miller of Santa Clara, Calif. Betty is further survived by the loves of her life, her four great-grandchildren, who her world revolved around: Brendan and Katherine Flanagan and Harriss and August Miller. Betty was deeply loved, was a caring and giving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Thursday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cathedral Prep, 225 West 9th St., Erie, PA 16501.
