Carol Marie Spiller Magenau Carol Marie Spiller Magenau, age 88, of Sarah A. Magenau III, of Fairview; and Kunda (Carol S.) Magenau of Carmel, Ind.; and her grandchildren J.M. Magenau, IV of Chicago, Ill., Andrew J.D. Magenau of Hattiesburg, Miss., Gillian MacLaren Jacobs of New York, N.Y. and Kyle MacLaren Brennan of Carmel, Inn.. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Dear Martin, John, Tina and Kunda,
Growing up next door to Carol and her family has had a profound
influence in so many of my decision. It is funny how you don't realize how much a person such as Carol has influenced you until many years have passed. My
experiences in meeting people from all over the world has been precious. Carol taught me so much about GIVING BACK! Of course, there were such fun times too! I
still sautee meat in beer, have lots of pets (I remember having the Holy Ghost living in your garage), go to Cook Forest several
times a year, and love my rock
by Neil D.. Carol's unending love for the world will live on in all
of us that she has touched!!
Lots of love, Mary Young Lubowicki

Dear Marty, John, Tina & Kunda,
Your wife/mother was a truely wonderful human being. Her generousity, sincereity and conviction to her beliefs are an inspiration to all of us who had the chance to learn from her. She and Connie were my mother's closest friends and I don't recall a single day that went by that Carol and my mother didn't talk over the phone about something. I remember the great parties and the wonderful congregation of unique people I was introduced to at your home. I will always have great memories of her.

We're sorry to learn of the death of Carol. We've known her for over 60 years. How she worked before it was a thing to do to bring races together.

So much of my early life was spent at the Magenau house after Tina discovered we lived down the street (on 24th). Carol not only made me feel welcome, she insisted that I participate in learning along with her children. Even after you all moved to Myrtle St., I was always welcome. I met so many interesting people because of Carol who also help instill values in me that I treasure to this day. I wish I could be with you at this sad time, just as Martin came to visit when my mother passed away. My husband was so impressed that you would be there for us. All of us who were touched by Carol and all the Magenau family are richer for that touch. Thank you.

I lived two doors down on Myrtle St so I experienced daily contact with the whole family. Kunda was my best buddy (hugs to you girl!) and John and Tina were the big siblings to look up to! I would walk to school with Kunda and Carol would always greet me cheerfully "Percy-Boo, I love you!" Bible studies in the neighborhood, promoting local artists were all part of her mission. She was a woman ahead of her time! I wish I could have known her when I was older so I could really listen with open ears to what she had to share! I always felt welcome in their house and feel very lucky to be able to keep in touch with Kunda. Sending Big Hugs to John, Tina and Kunda, Love, Priscilla (Percy Collyer) Schmidt

To the Walter Spiller Family,
I am ever so fortunate to have known Carol, through you. I met her during one of many Spiller family gatherings while dating Chris Bloomstine and immediately became enamored with her jovial character. Carol and I subsequently enjoyed many "Walk-N-Talks" side-by-side along the Glenwood Hills. Carol taught me to have love for knowledge (I still follow her example by intently reading and clipping interesting newspaper/magazine articles for myself and others), love for mankind (and womankind), and love for global awareness. I am in debt to her as I move through my career with passion for my work teaching racially challenged students (including those from depressed countries around the world). I teach International Baccalaureate Science in an inner city school. One thing that I know for sure is that her influence will spread far and wide for generations to come. Her infectious personality, to this day, spreads through me and to my students. Her spirit will forever live in my fondest memories and will certainly be there to comfort you in times of need. Peace be with you, Walter, and deepest sympathy to your family.

Martin and family,

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I will remember Carol most because she always listened to people and responded to their interests. She read so widely and cut out articles from newspapers and magazines to give to friends. I was often the recipient of the articles and appreciated that she not only remembered my passions, but cared enough to take time to keep me informed. She will be missed by so many people.

John and family,

Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Your mom was a great lady - I still recall discussions with her about unity in diversity and promoting harmony among the races. Her voice will be missed but her influence will be felt for generations.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I used to take care of Coop when I worked at Sarah Reed. The love between her and Martin was a joy to witness. Her smile could light up a room. She was always so happy. I would often take care of her on my off days so that she would not be alone. We would walk around the block and talk, she will be greatly misses.

My deepest sympathy to all of Carol's family. She was a neighbor and a friend to me when I was a young girl. With a little basic knowledge of sewing she taught me more, and even let me sew on her electric sewing machine (we had a treadle at the time). I baby sat Tina and Johnny for quite a few years. You have lost her to a terrible disease, but you know she is in a better place now.
