Charles Richard "Dick" Bowen, 82 of Girard died Monday November 25, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He was born June 25, 1931 in Erie, a son of the late George E. "Tud" and Irene Ellwanger Bowen.
Dick graduated from Cathedral Prep Academy in 1950. Following high school he attended Gannon University where he studied accounting. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force
during the Korean Conflict
and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge from the military he returned to the Erie area where he went to work at Griswold Mfg. He later went to work at American Sterilizer Corp. (Now Steris Inc) in the Payroll Dept. retiring from there following 37 years of service.
Dick coached and played baseball in the Glenwood League, Coached girls softball at AMSCO and was instrumental in building softball fields in Girard and organizing summer leagues for girls. He also Coached Little Gridders Football for many years. He served on the Girard Boro Council was a member of the Girard American Legion Post #494. He really enjoyed working with his sons on projects, building, landscaping and golfing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Bowen.
He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his wife Lynn Lloyd Bowen, whom he married April 13, 1954 in Shippensburg; also by four sons, Richard "Tad" Bowen (Diane) of Cranesville, David Lloyd Bowen (Cherie) of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Charles "Preston" Bowen (Tiffany) of Southlake, Texas, Thomas "Brooks" Bowen (Heather) of Hookstown, Pa.; a sister, Martha Dunn of Pittsburgh; two brothers, James Bowen (Joyce) of Girard, John Bowen (Pat) of Girard; sisters in law, Mary Bowen of Girard and Ginger Lambert (Glenn) of Flemington, N.J.; grandchildren, Tony, Casey, Katherine, Jonathan, Kennedy, Reese, Jude, Gracie and Kix also several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home, Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard and are invited to attend services there on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Keith Sundberg officiating.
Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with full military honors.
