Elizabeth Ida Connelly O'Hara Obituary
"Homemaker Par Excellence" Elizabeth Ida Connelly O'Hara, born January 18, 1920 in Erie, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Agnes Schelinski and Francis Connelly, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Home East Sunday, April 1, 2012, after telling the room full of family gathered around her, "I love this." On her father's birthday, she joined all eleven of her siblings who preceded her. Brothers: Prosper, George, John, and Robert and sisters: Agnes, Nan, Eloise, Margaret, Marion, Sally, and Joanne. She also was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 50 years, Joseph R. O'Hara and their three sons, William, Robert, and Martin. Betty and Joe were founding members of the Mount Calvary R. Catholic Church where they contributed in many capacities over the years. Betty was a member of the Legion of Mary and was a Eucharistic Minister. Even while in her 80s she still was driving through deep snow and challenging weather to provide Holy Communion to homebound parishioners. She was the President of the Women's Council for three terms and chaired the Christmas Tree booth fundraiser for years at the Annual Feather Party. She was always contributing gift theme baskets for various church social events. Betty was also a distinguished volunteer where her husband worked at the Gertrude Barber Center, and was a consistent March of Dimes fundraiser as well as the treasurer of the E.A.R.C. for many years. She was employed at the Boston Store for 10 years. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen (Bill) Vahey; son, Joseph (Sandy) O'Hara; and daughter, Jean (David) Bretz. Along with twelve grandchildren, Patrick (Michele) Vahey, Joseph (Colette) Vahey, William (Kit) Vahey, Elizabeth (Eric) Seibert, Elly Vahey, Joseph O'Hara, III, Justin (Libby) O'Hara, Andrew O'Hara, Katie Scarlette O'Hara, Timothy (Penny) Bretz, Jennifer (Franco) Cresta, and Amanda Bretz; as well as twenty-four great-grandchildren, Patrick Vahey, Jr., Sterling and Connor Vahey, Cole and Megan Vahey, Martin, Hayden, and Brendan Seibert, Kateri and Tobias Vahey, Ashley, Michelina, and Marin O'Hara, Silvana, Jayden, Madysin, and Averly O'Hara, Ryan, Zoe, and Zane O'Hara, Cassie, T.J., Joshua Bretz, and Giordano Cresta. Betty is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th and Liberty on Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Mount Calvary Catholic Church, East Lake Road.
