F. Thomas "Tom" Kwarciak, age 84, of North East passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at his home. He was born in Rome, N.Y. on June 14, 1928 to the late Frank and Bessie Orzolek Kwarciak. Thomas was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army. Prior to serving in the United States Army he began his career as a Tool and Die Maker after graduating trade school. He was formerly employed at General Electric as a Manufacturing Engineer for 31 years until retiring in 1990. Thomas was a member of St. Gregory's Church. He was past president of the North East Exchange Club where he was instrumental in creating the Freedom Shrine in Gibson Park, lifetime member of the VFW Post 4789, North East American Legion Post 105, past member of the Steczko Post in Rome, N.Y. Enjoyed golf and was a longtime member of the Lakeview Country Club. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Estelle Ryan, Eleanor Small, and Dolores Monin. Thomas is survived by his wife of 56 years, Emily Lekki Kwarciak, whom he married April 14, 1956; sons, Thomas Kwarciak and wife, Kathryn of Cary, N.C., Stephen Kwarciak and wife, Rebecca of Pompano Beach, Fla., Richard Kwarciak and wife, Susan of Bay Village, Ohio; sister, Mildred McGrath of Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Thursday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and additional visitation at the Nunn and Harper & Son Funeral Home, 418 North George Street, Rome, N.Y. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Saturday at the Transfiguration Church in Rome, N.Y.
