1928 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Gertrude Ann (Belczyk) Zawistowski Obituary
Our beloved mother, Gertrude Ann (Belczyk) Zawistowski, 89, passed away after a long, healthy life, on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Saint Mary's Home East, her home for the past one and a half years.

Gert was born on July 10, 1928, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The only daughter of Frank and Anna (Nowak) Belczyk, she grew up under the watchful eyes of her five brothers, John, Frank, Raymond, Leonard, and Robert, who have preceded her in death.

She graduated from Saint Hedwig Grade School, and was a proud East High Warrior, class of 1947. She married "Ted" Thaddeus Zawistowski, and together they raised their two children, Patricia Ann and Robert John. Gert enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family and friends, baking, shopping (especially for shoes), couponing, and polka music. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, its Altar Rosary Society, and the Siebenbuerger Club Women's Auxiliary.

Early on, Gert worked at Pulakos Candies. Once her children entered high school, she became employed by the Erie School District, at the Wilson Middle School Cafeteria, from where she retired.

Gert was the life of the party. She loved helping others, especially her family. She volunteered for everything, from Girl Scouts to the Lifeworks Senior Center, where she assisted with flu shots, and worked in the kitchen with her best friend, Rose Morrow, for many years. She also volunteered at the Caring Closet, and was an aide in various classrooms at the Erie School District.

She was widowed in 1994. In time, she met Dave Amoriello, and the couple shared 12 wonderful years together, until Dave's passing in October 2013. Dave's daughter, Sally, her husband, Fred, and their two daughters, Kyndra and Breanna became a second family to Gert. She loved spending time with them at their home in Florida and all the many adventures they took her on.

Gert is survived by her daughter, Patty Regan (husband, Pat), her son, Robert Toski (wife, Tammy), and her beloved grandchildren, Aubry (husband, Jon) DeMarco, Daniel, Shannon, Molly and Aidan Regan, and Hannah (fiancée, Aaron), and Taylor Toski. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Words cannot express the gratitude we have for the employees at Saint Mary's Home East, especially the 3rd Floor staff, the Activities staff, and all the many friends, family and health care professionals who have helped care for Gert in recent years. Gert was loved by all who met her and will be terribly missed.

Relatives and friends may call at the Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, Inc., 459 East 12th Street, Erie, PA 16503, on Monday, July 16, 2018 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Holy Rosary Church from 9 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 218 East 11th Street, Erie, PA 16503, or to Holy Rosary Church, 2701 East Ave, Erie, PA 16504.
