James S. Hardner, age 85, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Fairview Manor. Jim was born at home, on February 7, 1927, and grew up on Gridley Ave. His parents were the late Rufus and Theresa Trapp Hardner. During Jim's early years he delivered newspapers, hunted golf balls at Glenwood for spending money and set bowling pins at South Erie Turners Club. He also attended St. Joseph's Parochial School with his siblings, and graduated from in 1942. As an adult, he joined the army and left Erie, but later returned and was employed by the city. Jim was in the tank division of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Starting in 1954, he worked at the Sanitation Department for the City of Erie for 33 years. Jim led an active life with many interests. He enjoyed bowling, walking his dogs in Glenwood Park, and playing pinochle with family and friends. Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Onda Hardner in 1966, close friend Nancy Discoll Abel, brothers, Gerald Hardner and wife Margaret Hardner Churchley, Thomas Hardner, sister, Lois Hardner Paradise and husband John Paradise and sister-in-law, Trish Hardner. He is survived by five brothers, Ken Hardner and his wife Kay, Timothy Hardner and his wife Andrea, Jeffrey Hardner all of Erie and John Hardner and his wife Emily of Key West, Fla., and Christopher Hardner and his wife Marsha of Platea. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. The Francis V.
