She then enrolled at The Pennsylvania State College (now The Pennsylvania State University) in March 1944 and received a B.S. degree in Science in February 1947. While at Penn State, she was president of the Independent Women's Association. She worked for six months at General Electric in Erie prior to accepting a position at Hoffmann-LaRoche in Nutley, N.J., where she was a research laboratory technician. She left Roche following the birth of her first son, and later worked at two other chemical firms in New Jersey. She married Abe Elkin, of New York City, on July 10, 1949, in Erie, Pa. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2003. Jean is survived by two sons, James M. Elkin of Nutley, N.J., and Robert G. Elkin and his wife, Emily J. Besides her family, Jean's main passions were tennis, antiques, bridge, the New York Times crossword puzzles, and Penn State. She was an accomplished duplicate bridge player and achieved the rank of Diamond Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League in 2004. She was a proud member of the Penn State Alumni Association for over 50 years. Jean was an extremely kind person who loved life.
