John Nesgoda Obituary

John Lee Nesgoda, Ph.D. of Pittsburgh, Pa., 65, died on July 9, 2010 after a long career in international studies. He was born in Erie on April 9, 1945 a son of John W. and Leona Henry Nesgoda. His love for languages and things international began at Harbor Creek High School (63), where he enjoyed the Latin and Spanish courses of Cesare Muzzi. During his undergraduate work at Penn State (67, English Literature), he received a scholarship to study in Salamanca, Spain (65). After graduation he began a two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Colombia. He completed a first master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh in Theoretical Linguistics with Certification in Teaching English as a Second Language ( 77). After a brief stint writing textbooks in Hawaii, he returned to Pittsburgh where, for eight years, he advised international students in the winter and taught English as a Second Language at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. In 1979 he earned a second master's degree from Pitt, this time in Hispanic Languages and literatures. In 1982 he completed a doctoral degree in Hispanic Linguistics, also from Pitt, where he taught in the departments of Linguistics, English, and Spanish. For nearly three decades at Carlow University he was the Director of the International Student Center (bringing international students to the U.S. and sending American students to study abroad), Chair of the Modern Language Department, and Associate Professor of Spanish. In 2004 he received the university's Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2010 he was awarded the position of Professor Emeritus. He retired in December of 2009. He is survived by his mother and father, John and Leona; two brothers, James and William (Ann); several nieces and nephews; and his partner of 39 years, John Keys. Memorials can be made to Hospice or to a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 14th at 6 p.m. at the Harborcreek First Presbyterian Church, 6724 Buffalo Rd., Harborcreek, Pa.

I'm so sorry to hear of John's passing. We attended Harbor Creek schools together for many years and but had not stayed in touch. I fondly remember his quick wit and intelligence. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I chose Carlow for school only because of John. He always helped me or other international students. I feel so lucky that I could be one of his students and work for ISA together. I really loved talking to him at his office, I really regret that I did not stop by his office after I graduated, and I really miss John. John will be missed by a lot of his students.

My condolences to the Nesgoda family. I graduated in 1963 with John. He and I shared classes and were on the yearbook staff together. Our times shared were filled with laughter, tears, toil and sweat and I treasure every memory. We were all blessed to have had him in our lives.
God bless.

John- I will miss you. Oh- how you brought the world, its beauty and wonder, to everyone... to me, to Purnima, to all the International Student Association. Safe travels, my friend.

John has been a unique gift to all of us at Carlow, students, faculty colleagues, staff and administration. He was caring, evenhanded, demanding, questionning with all of us. He dared to challenge thoughtfully any inequity that came to his attention; he created possibilities where others saw barriers; he put all who came into his field of vision before himself. He made
countless middle of the night trips to the airport for our inernational students, kept loving vigil with dying friends, supplemented income for a colleague who had a vision of doing something special for blind children, taught with enthusiasm, counseled, and generally just CARED. No one will ever "replace" him. May he know peace, joy and the fulness of life with a God whose love he always embodied.

It was a distinct honor to work with John his many years at Carlow. His love for international academics shown brightly and I cannot imagine the number of students he helped either come to Pittsburgh or helped travel from Pittsburgh abroad throughout his career. John will be sorely missed. As a faculty member and as a Carlow alum, he will always have my deepest appreciation for the legacy he has left for us. I extend my personal sympathy to his beloved family, his close friends, and his Carlow colleagues.

I've worked at Carlow University for 19 years and I met John during my first week. He was a one and only and will be truly missed. I wish a happy memory - think of John - see his smiling face - hold that always in your heart. My sympathies to the Nesgoda family and John Keys.

As the Chair of the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Carlow University I had the pleasure of working with John on study abroad activities, on international student issues and on academic committees. I always looked forward to opportunities to work with John and I valued his counsel and his sense of humor. His students always came first and he was a strong asset to our faculty. We will miss him.

July 13, 2010

My condolences to you all. I worked with John as he arranged for study abroad for the Honors program students at Carlow. He was consistently knowledgeable and always a gentleman. John will be missed. I believe that he's off enjoying "other travels" now!

I too offer my deepest condolences to John's partner and family. John was the most extraordinary and gifted teacher as well as a kind and supportive friend and colleague. I was blessed to study Spanish under his tutelage during the last two years that he was able to teach and I will never forget that delightfully rich experience. You might think that as his illness progressed he would have less to give as a teacher. If that is the case, I would have loved to have seen him in his heyday, for to me in these past few years he was the brightest and most inspiring teacher I have ever known. As colleagues in different departments at Carlow University, John was also my dear friend, a treasured confidant, a teaching role model, a truly special person. The world needs more people like him and that's why I am so sad that he has left us. I hold his memory in my heart and his loved ones in my prayers.

During my first weeks working here at Carlow, I met with John and was very impressed with him and his work. I told him that we were so very privileged to have him at Carlow. There were times over the years that John and I would work together with students or for alumnae travel. He was a first class person. I'm so sad to know that he is no longer with us. My deepest sympathy to John's family and to John K.

I was very saddened to hear about John's passing. I have such fond memories of him from elementary through high school. His scholastic aptitude never got in the way of his down-to-earth friendliness. He was truly a friend to all, and I loved him. I last saw him at our 20th-year class reunion, a long time ago, but I remembered him always. He had a special place in my heart. My thoughts are with his family.

We knew John both as a colleague at Carlow for a short time (Mark) and as members of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and through our work in the greater Pittsburgh international educational exchange community. John was a kind and gentle soul who always had a smile on his face. He touched the lives of countless hundreds of students and educators and made this world a far better place by teaching others that through a keen awareness and understanding of what makes us different, we are able, ultimately, to see all that makes us similar. John is in a far better place now, soaring with the angels. Our deepest sympathy to John's parents, John Keys, John's siblings, extended family and friends. May you all find deep solace through those special gifts of cultural and linguistic awareness that John gave to so many others through his inspiring work.

Dear John, Leona, Jim, Bill and Ann, I am saddened to learn of Johnie's death. I remember him from our early days growing up together at Redeemer Church. He spoke to our Luther League about his Peace Corps experience and that very day I decided one day I too would be a PC Volunteer. In that way, he changed my life. And what a remarkable life he had. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Bob Morrow Jr.

I first met Dr. Nesgoda 7 years ago when I was a freshman at Carlow. Dr. Nesgoda fast became a friend and advisor. We would still talk even after I graduated from Carlow. He made a genuine point to assist anyone he could. I know he has affected many lives and not just those at Carlow. My condolences to all of Dr. Nesgoda's loved ones. ~Andrea Parise (Pittsburgh, PA)

My heart is broken to hear that my best friend/cousin growing up has passed away. He made my childhood so wonderful. We use to do everything together. I feel so sad that we didn't stay in touch in our later years. I can only hope that he knew that I loved him and thought of him so very often. We will be coming to the services so I can say my sad goodbyes and maybe it will help bring closure. I also want to be there for my aunt and uncle. My heart goes out them and my two cousins and their families.
