Joseph L. Kala Obituary
Joseph L. Kala, 89, of Erie, passed away at Brevellier Village on Sunday, September 9, 2018. He was born June 29, 1929, in Erie, Pa., son of the late Vincent and Victoria Mikolaczyk Kala.

He was an employee of Hammermill Paper Company for 45 years. He also was a U.S. Navy Veteran and on September 23, 1954 he received a letter, which stated, "It is felt that the discharge of Kala is not only a loss to this ship, but to the Naval Service as a whole."

He was a founding member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Seniors Club and he also served as an usher. He was a member of the Elks Club, Polish Falcon Nest 123 and 610, the Siebenbuerger Club, American Legion Post 571, and the VFW. He enjoyed mowing the lawn and collecting aluminum tabs for charities.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy A. Jakubowski Kala, three daughters, Ann Marie Iavarone, Charlotte Bugdon (Greg) and Michele Perkins (Ron). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Nikki Iavarone, Audra Kozen, Adrienne Iavarone, Joe and Jon Bugdon, and eight great-grandchildren Jared, Justin, R.J., Abby, Ivy, Luca, Madison, Dominic, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Kala, three sisters, Mary Zdunski, Sophie Thieman, Helen Matulevich, and a son-in-law, David Iavarone.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, Inc., 459 East 12th Street, Erie, PA 16503 on Thursday September 13, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be at the Funeral Home on Friday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
