Rebecca Crandall Flaherty of Erie, age 59, passed away at home on Thursday, July 12, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 12, 1953, she was the loving daughter of Orville and Jean Crandall. A 1971 graduate of Harborcreek High School, Becky participated in cheerleading and band. Following high school, she attended Edinboro University where she earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree. Her master's degree focused on secondary education and it was this that sparked her passion for counseling young students. For over thirty years, Becky worked as a guidance counselor for the Intermediate Unit's Act 89 Program with assignments at Villa Maria Academy for the first twenty of those years and at Mercyhurst Preparatory School for the remaining years. As a counselor, Becky was known to be extremely committed to assisting her students with curricular advice and perhaps, more importantly, with personal issues. An avid fan of athletics, she particularly enjoyed running and participated in many races throughout the Erie area. It was her goal to run a marathon and she achieved that in 2002, running and finishing the Chicago Marathon. Beside her parents, Becky is preceded in death by her niece, Jennifer. She is survived by her husband, William J. Flaherty, Jr., and her brothers Daniel Crandall (Nancy) of Chelan, Wash. and Joel Crandall (Patricia) of Erie. Other surviving family includes Bill's children Stephen Flaherty (Amy) of Harrisburg, Pa.; Sarah Quinn (Kevin) of Drexel Hill, Pa.; Nora McGinley (Raymond) of Lakewood, Ohio and Patrick Flaherty (Natalie) of Erie; and four grandchildren. Friends may call on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Jude the Apostle Church, 2801 West 6th Street on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be private at the convenience of the Family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Home of Erie, Villa Maria Academy, Mercyhurst Preparatory School or to one's choice. Condolences to www.bruggerfuneral homes.com
