Richard Nile Butler, 77, of Union City, went to be with the Lord on December 27, 2012. He was born in Union City on December 24, 1935, the son of the late Charles F. and Fern Benson Butler. After a difficult struggle with cancer, Richard enjoyed his last days at home, with much love and support from friends and family. Richard graduated, with the class of 1954, from Union City Area High School, where he met Joan Magee, the girl who became his beloved wife. He spent his life as a third generation dairy and crop farmer, but still had time for hunting, watching the Steelers, and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known for his teasing and generosity, Richard was a hard worker with rough hands and a gentle, loving heart. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 54 years Joan; daughters Cindy (Gary) Wells of Union City and Sonya (Douglas) Nelson of Erie; sons Richard (Renee) Butler of Erie and Brian (Alison) Butler of Wattsburg; grandchildren Jason (Jessica) Barteldt of Uniontown, Pa.; Rechelle (Michael II) Kennedy of Waterford; Lynn, Kristen, and Wendy Nelson of Erie; Brooke Butler of Wattsburg; Presley and Reed Butler of Erie; step-grandchildren Jessica Wells Coon and Uriah (Boolanchai) Wells; nine great-grandchildren; sisters Virgina (Carl) Henry of Pace, Fla.; and Carolyn Blakeslee of Union City; a brother Harold (Elsa Mae) Butler of Union City; many nieces and nephews and numerous others, whose lives he impacted, in the course of his work.
