Ruth "Gretchen" Keating, age 91, of Erie, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Erie on March 8, 1921 to the late Rolland and Irene Weissert. Gretchen was a life-long Erie resident who graduated from St. Joseph's grade school and Academy High School. During WWII, she worked for Bliley Electric. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper for Nabisco Co. She married her husband, Peter Keating on July 12, 1958. From that point on, she was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. Gretchen loved to garden, bicycle, take walks, cook and read. She credited her long life to a glass of wine every day before dinner and a little chocolate after. But her life's passion was always for her family, especially her six wonderful grandchildren. The family would like to thank Ron & Eleanor Diehl and Asera Care Hospice for their excellent loving care they took of our mother. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Peter and sisters Jean Blake and Claire Dailey. She is survived by her sons, Chris wife Lisa of Erie, Pat wife Kathryn of Annendale, Va. She is further survived by her six grandchildren, Patrick, John, Paul, Maureen, Sarah and Ellie as well as her sister Norma Hutchinson; cousin's Agnes Hoppe and Marilyn Povlock. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her "granddogs" Rocky and her beloved Happy. Private viewing will be held at the convenience of the family at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengardel Blvd. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Peace Church on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Erie County Memorial Garden Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her 5 year old nephew who is battling cancer. Kanen Keating-Wear Fund, P.O. Box 372, Avalon, NJ 08202.
