She was born in Corry, Pa., on October 9, 1920, the daughter of the late Felix and Pauletta King Smith. Shirley was raised and educated in Corry and was a 1938 graduate of Corry High School. Her avocations included china painting, oil painting, cooking, baking, reading, fishing and making Christmas candy. She was well known for sending notes of encouragement and often soup to those who she felt needed to know someone cared. Shirley always modeled treating others with respect and caring, looking for the good in people. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray Dennis, in 1993 after nearly 50 years of marriage. In 1996, Shirley was married to Fred Carl Haenel, who also preceded her in death a few years later. She was also preceded by her brother, Richard Smith. Those fortunate to have been loved and cared for by her include her children, Kathy Dennis Walters and her husband Ron of Columbus, Pa.; and Richard Dennis of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandchildren Heidi Walters VanWoert and her husband Brett of Corning, N.Y., and Nick Walters and his wife Veronica of Parrish, Fla. Also, Shirley's special joys included her great-grandchildren, Blake and Jack VanWoert, and Brooke, Nicholas and Lauren Walters. Several nieces and nephews were among those who were special to her. Shirley's step-children, their children, grandchildren and others of the Haenel family were part of her special circle. There will be no calling hours observed. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 201 E. South St., Corry, PA 16407, the Corry Public Library, 117 W.
