Virgil Young Obituary

Melbourne, Florida

Virgil L. Young, age 93, died on December 9, 2016, at his home in Florida. He enjoyed excellent health for 92 years and was able to stay in his home where he was cared for by his family.

Virgil was born in Cranesville, Pa., and survived his parents, Ocie and Tudor Young, and four siblings, Williard, Harold, Doris and Ester.

Virgil was a veteran of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a major after 32 years of service.

Virgil who was a flight engineer and his fellow crew members made history from February 26 to March 2, 1949, when they successfully flew the B-50 Lucky Lady II in the first non-stop flight around the world. They flew from Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, landing back at Carswell after 94 hours, refueling four times in mid-air.

Virgil was married to Marjorie Knapp from Albion for 54 years. Virgil and Marjorie enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family after they retired.

After Marjorie passed, Virgil married Natalie Kean from Conneautville, Pa. They were married for ten years.

Virgil is survived by his two children Bonnie and her husband, Tim Gauthier and Floyd and his wife, Drue, grandchildren Todd Gauthier, Terri Tandarich, Michelle Kambrick, Wendy Miller, and Luke Young and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by Natalie's four children Mike, Ted, Jeff, and Debbie Kean, grandchildren Julie Wilson, Leighann Ransom, Melissa Baxter, Amanda, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Dustin, Adam, and Jaime Kean and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at Hope Cemetery on Saturday, November 11th at 9 a.m.
