1935-2012 John Griffith Rall, age 78, of Harborcreek, died Friday April 27, 2012 at Hamot Hospital He was born in Bartlesville, Okla. on January 25, 1935. A certified CPA, John was a professor of accountancy at Edinboro University. He earned his BS from Illinois Wesleyan University, an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MS from the University of Wyoming. A member of the Erie Yacht Club, John also belonged to the Torch Club, the Erie Power Squadron, and from 1994-99 was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. An avid sailor, John also played the trombone in various bands and sang in the Presque Isle chorus. He was a professor at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. and the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his teaching career, he was a chemist for the US Bureau of Mines in Laramie, Wyoming. He was known for his rational inquiry on a range of topics including, philosophy, history and science. In addition to his beloved wife, Joan Martin Rall, survivors include his stepchildren, Rebecca Martin of Austin, Texas and Joan Houghton and her husband Neil, of Moore, South Carolina, as well as his adored grandchildren Lindsay Porter, Austin, Texas; Denny Porter; South Korea; Rachel Porter, Seattle, Wash.; and Jeremy Houghton, Moore, S.C. Friends of the family may call at the G.R. Bailey Funeral Home, 4396 Iroquois Avenue on Sunday from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 837 Bartlett Road on Monday 10 a.m., followed by burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace. Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Mercy Church or the French Creek Council, Boy Scouts of America, 1851 Robison Road West, Erie, PA 16509.
