Joseph Francis Konkol, 85, of Erie, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning at St. Mary's Home-East where he had been recovering from surgery. He was born July 10, 1926, in Erie, son of the late Paul and Mary (Sierota) Konkol. Joe proudly served his country trading high school graduation for a tour in the Philippines in WW II with his twin brother, buddy, and best friend, Edward, and eldest brother, Raymond. Joe married his high school sweetheart, Florence Elizabeth Izbicki, on July 16, 1949 and celebrated 62 years of marriage with his "girl friend". He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 81 and served as a Business Agent for many years, a teacher at Tech Memorial High School, and worked for the Erie School District at central maintenance. Joe's affinity to teaching led him to be a substitute teacher for the school district after formerly retiring. We knew him to be one who liked to have fun and be active as we saw him umpire and be honored for his dedication by the Umpires Association for his 50 year commitment. He was always one willing to help and mentored several boys at the East Side Boys Club where he passed on his skills and knowledge in woodworking. Dedicated to the church and other organizations, Joe made the Cursillo #89, and was a long time member of the Moniuzko Singing Society where his wit and humor will always be remembered. In recent years he loved visits with his grandchildren and whether it was watching them shoot hoops in the driveway, kickball in the yard, or basketball at St. Lukes, you could always find him with his favorite chair. Joe is survived by his wife; five children, Jacquelyn Toombs (Larry) of Seattle, Rosemarie Foessett (Tom) of Erie, John Konkol (Mary) of Erie, Paul Konkol of Erie, and Joseph Konkol (Julie) of Pittsburgh. He has seven grandchildren, Marci Toombs, Megan Konkol, Madison Konkol, Michala Konkol, Haley Konkol, David Konkol, and Peter Konkol. He is also survived by three brothers, Edward Konkol (twin) and wife, Sadie, John "Jack" Konkol and wife, Frances, and Thomas Konkol, all of Erie; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest brother, Raymond and his brother, Louis. Relatives and friends may call at the Edward J.
