Ross Edward Gaerttner, Sr., age 76, of Erie, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012. Born in Erie, October 20, 1935, he was a son of the late Otto and Georgia (Brown) Gaerttner. He served with the U.S. Army during both the Korean War and Vietnam War and retired from the Army Reserves as a Staff Sergeant. He had previously worked for Durst Trucking in his younger years, and went on to work in maintenance at Lord Corporation, retiring from there after 37 years of service. He was also a volunteer firefighter and past chief for the Kearsarge Volunteer Fire Company. Ross being an avid outdoorsman enjoyed hunting and working with wood. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, especially at the ice rink, watching them play hockey and figure skate. He was a life member of the Zukor Club, where he enjoyed many dinners with his wife. He had a 1966 Chevy Caprice, which he cherished getting out in once in a while. He was never too busy as to stop and help someone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, William, Raymond, Hugh, Charles, Otto, George, and Richard Gaerttner; and two sisters, Mary Colvin and Louise "Irene" Yost. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gae (Rossi) Gaerttner, of Erie; three children, Ross E. Gaerttner II, wife, Michele, Michael D. Gaerttner and Kristen Auen, husband, Charles, all of Erie; six grandchildren, Jenny Bell, husband, Jonathan, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Benjamin Gaerttner, Meghan Gaerttner, Branden Auen, Deven Auen, and Chelcie Alcorn, all of Erie; one great-grandson, Joshua Bell, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; four sisters, Loretta Joint, Rose Andrezjczak, Sally Joint, and Judith Mook; sister-in-law, Joy Mathewson of Arizona; and chosen family, Steve, Cheryl and Melissa Danowski and Karen Johnson. Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 W. 38th St., at Greengarden Blvd., Sunday, May 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and to attend a service of memories there, Monday, May 21 at 11a.m. Burial will follow at Erie Cemetery.
